Shelby Williams - Update on COVID-19, Coronavirus

The steps taken in response to COVID-19, Coronavirus, are unprecedented. While the human impact thus far is much less than in some pandemics--even the annual flu--these efforts are being undertaken to ensure the impact remains far less.

The City of Plano today has taken the step today of canceling all classes and group gatherings at our Recreation Centers, Libraries, and the Senior Center. The facilities themselves will remain open, and staff are ensuring deep and frequent sanitizing, but please exercise social responsibility, and avoid such facilities and other people (except your medical provider) if you are unwell.

Rest assured that the City of Plano is working hand-in-hand daily with County Health Care Services and the Department of State Health Services to stay abreast of new information and respond appropriately as this situation develops.

Firm conclusions cannot yet be drawn regarding Coronavirus, but the following has been observed:

  • COVID-19 does not appear to be as dangerous as previous viruses, such as SARS, but seems more dangerous than the run-of-the-mill flu.

  • It appears to spread like the flu, but may be slightly more contagious

  • Infected individuals may go for two weeks without experiencing any symptoms or realizing they are infectious

With this in mind, we ask that everyone exercise social responsibility and take precautions. We have made information available at the following website: https://share.plano.gov/COVID-19update

The State of Texas has also set up a call center to respond to questions regarding Coronavirus, but if you are feeling ill, you should contact your healthcare provider. The call center may be contacted at 1-877-570-9779, or email at coronavirus@dshs.texas.gov, but please understand contact volume may be extremely high.

Everyone can practice social responsibility to help mitigate the spread and impact of Coronavirus by taking proper precautions, as illustrated below.

By exercising proper precautions, we'll all get through this together. We'll keep you informed of additional developments as they come.

Thank you,

-Shelby Williams
